Hello, winter! It was such a glorious summer here in Vermont that the cooler temps of fall were bittersweet. But the bright, bold, amazing foliage made up for that in spades. Now it is time to say a fond farewell to those seasons and gear up for winter! Ski season is officially upon us as Killington has opened for the 2014/2015 season! As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, we will ready our snowshoes, skis, snowboards and more. It is a very exciting time for Trailside Inn and Vermont as a whole! Photos Trailside Inn
While we have only been at Trailside for 4 months, we have encountered so many wonderful people in that short time. We have had guests who ski and snowboard to guests who are here to celebrate the marriage of a loved one. They have allowed us to share in their conversation, share in their laughter, share in their lives. Many have even brought us gifts. We are truly fortunate to have met such incredible people! Thank you Zuzana & Martin, Michael & David, Jessica & David, Xavier, Camille, Lee & Steven, Heidi & Ron, Lenni & Lori, Brian H, Jill, Shane, Dallas, Steven H, Steven R, Richard, Robert, Ashley, Brian & Dory, the Crowley family, the Amirault family, Doug, Kathy, Tara, Gilbert, the Badger family, the Miller family, Kerry & Prithvi, Prahlad & Deepa & Bikram, the Calhoun family, Page, Laura, Zach, Jonathon, David & Sarah, Conor & Danyelle, Eric, Joanna, MJ, DJ, Joe, Jonathan, Ben, Jesse & Crystal, Neil (Patrick) and family, Kent and family, Lisa…the list could go on and on and on!!! A card that was sent to us by one of our guests, and amazing person, Page, shows precisely just how wonderful the people are that we get the pleasure of meeting! She writes, “…Who knows if I will ever get to Trailside Inn again but maybe I will. I want Room #208, I loved it, it was perfect. Thank you for everything, making the switch of rooms, breakfast, bandaids and that great fire at night. I loved your Inn, but I would never go if you left. I know you work so hard – keep it simple as you can, do not lose its charm, it never will if you two are the owners.” Page, you are truly the sweetest! Take time to notice the incredible people that walk into your life! Photos Trailside Inn
The Trailside Inn hosted a SOLO School Wilderness First Aid course May 9th & 10th. Wilderness First Aid, commonly referred to as WFA, teaches basic first aid for backcountry emergencies. Steve Lulek, who also runs the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center, was the instructor for this 16-hour course. Steve is an incredible source of knowledge and can relate everything back to personal experiences. The class is the perfect balance of lectures, example stories and outdoor “live” scenarios. The class is great for any outdoor enthusiast who hikes, bikes and camps. Our class was full of Death Racers and Killington Search & Rescue team members. The Certification and knowledge gained is worth 100 times the cost of the course and we would highly recommend it to all. Information from SOLO’s website: “Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one-and maybe even save a life. The WFA is 16 hours long (two days), and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies.” Click for more information on SOLO, WFA and the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. We had such a wonderful time hosting the Spartan Death Race Camp with Peak Races this past weekend! With the exception of a few early comers, 30 campers began arriving Friday late morning. After a very quick settling in, they were set right to tasking outside the Inn. Lucky for them it was a BEAUTIFUL day. They chopped and stacked wood, built a wonderful new, natural stone fire pit for the Inn and took a dip in the creek for their racer bibs. (Trailside would like to humbly thank each of these men and women for the hard work that they did to help us out!) After several hours of these tasks, the Death Race campers moved on to other great things that were awaiting them down the road in Pittsfield, VT. The weather held for the day but began to get cold and rainy overnight. Good training for Death Race! The majority of the campers’ time was spent doing physical labor (chopping wood, lifting heavy stones, carrying packs with gear, moving huge beams, etc), but the campers were also treated to an education in Orienteering from Steve Lulek of Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. Steve gave them invaluable tools for the Death Race as well as incredibly useful information for life. They also had the opportunity to do 2 hours of primal fitness (an intense training activity using rocks and logs to build overall strength and core stability), led by Abdul Mujib of North Country Kettlebells. Saturday evening the event concluded with a wonderful meal put on by the Pittsfield Original General Store, served here at Trailside. Sunday morning a session of restorative yoga was held. Special thanks to Mark Jones, Joshua Eckler, Andy Weinberg, Peter Borden, Sefra Levin, Kevin Lasko, Katie Haines-Stiles, Ehrlin Sweeney and Marion Abrams! What a great experience for all the Spartan Death Race Camp participants and everyone else involved! We cannot wait for the next one! Photos Trailside Inn
